To irrigate a key lawn and flower bed perimeter, lines needed to pass directly beneath an existing concrete pedestrian sidewalk. The walkway was high-traffic, structurally sound, and critical for accessibility on service days. Every commercial contractor who previously inspected the site offered the same unacceptable ultimatum: saw-cut the concrete, dig an open trench, install the line, and pour a mismatched patch.

Pneumatic Boring: Precision Under Difficult Subsurface Conditions
Rather than accepting demolition, SFM’s grounds and technical operations team brought in specialized trenchless technology: a pneumatic boring device, commonly referred to in the trade as an “air mole.”
Powered by a high-capacity mobile air compressor, this missile-like percussion tool utilizes reciprocating internal hammering to displace and compact soil radially outward, carving an exact, stable underground conduit without removing overburden.
Navigating Sub-Base Challenges
Precision Irrigation Under Concrete
Trenchless boring under concrete is rarely frictionless. As the team initiated the bore beneath the church walkway, they encountered heavily compacted, dense river gravel used during the original sidewalk bed preparation. This dense subgrade threatened to deflect the tool’s trajectory.
SFM’s field specialists adapted immediately: by recalibrating pneumatic strike pressure and anchoring the pipe directly behind the head of the boring tool, our technicians forced the sleeve forward simultaneously with the bore. This prevented sidewall collapse and preserved an exact line straight through to the receiving pit on the opposite side of the walkway.
